Naval Dockyard

After the Bombay Dockyard, the Naval Dockyards at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, is one of India’s most major dockyards.

The Royal Indian Navy established a “Boat Repair Workshop” in Visakhapatnam in December 1941. Not long after the start of World War II in Europe. In order to serve the Indian army units in Burma.

The facility in Visakhapatnam was extended in March 1942, to include blacksmith and carpenter workshops, as well as machine tools, all of which were hosted abroad at the naval base INS Circars. This was done as part of the Navy’s initiative to set up coastal forces in many Indian coastal cities.

In 1947, this was substantially improved, becoming a ship servicing facility with a 200-ton slipway.

Existing workshop units were relocated inside the new BRO complex in 1953, when the facility was expanded to become a Base Repair Organization (BRO).

The plan to create a naval base and dockyard in Vizag was approved by the Union Cabinet in 1958. A new jetty, a workshop facility, and the purchase of 550 acres of property from the Port Trust were all authorised in 1962. The BRO was designated Naval Dockyard in 1972.
