The French government founded the “Ecole de Medicine de Pondicherry” in 1823, which served as the foundation for the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER).
The new medical college’s foundation was established in 1956, and the hospital opened its doors in 1964.
In 2008, JIPMER was designated as a national institution by the Indian government’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
It is a facility set up for patient care, teaching, and research in the field of health.
It occupies 192 acres.
The institution has four residential complexes, seven hospital blocks, an academic center, a nursing college, one administration block, and seven buildings for supplementary services.
