The Border Security Force (BSF) protects India’s borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh.
It was founded on December 1, 1965, in the aftermath of the 1965 War, “for preserving the security of India’s borders and things related therewith”. As one of India’s five Central Armed Police Forces.
It takes on a multitude of roles throughout a war.
It is the only CAPF with its own full-fledged Water Wing, Air Wing, and Artillery Regiment.
It is under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
BSF has its own cadre of officers, but its head, known as a Director-General (DG), has been an officer from the Indian Police Service since its inception.
From 25 battalions in 1965 to 192 battalions with a sanctioned strength of 270,363 personnel. Including an expanding Air wing, Marine wing, artillery regiment, and specialised units, the BSF has grown exponentially.
It presently has the largest border patrol force in the world.
The BSF – Border Security Force is known as India’s “First Line of Defense.”
